Content providers that distribute streaming media directly to our house and cable TV providers are not the only ones who are aiding in the transitioning of the consumers to the “cord-cutting” pattern, that has gained currency in recent times.  Conventional fixed lines providers are also witnessing a similar shift among their clients, especially the ones who have availed small business VoIP. Thanks to the development of Voice over Internet Protocol communication aka VoIP and the omnipresence of high speed internet.




So what is VoIP?

This technology actually dates back to 1995.  It was initiated for transmitting voice phone calls over data networks using Internet Protocol (IP). Government, educational institutions, health institutions, service sectors such as financial and retailing corporations were the sectors to initial transition to VoIP. With the means of VoIP, telephony signals are digitized through dedicated or shared circuits and are transmitted as packets to their destinations. The same technological agency implemented by chat rooms, e-Commerce web messaging, e-learning, internet/web call centres, other types of IP transaction as well as video streaming. At present, VoIP comes in various forms. The services are rendered to provide telephone services as well. There are 4 kinds of connections that provide VoIP. They are as follows:

IP to IP (e.g.  MSN, Skype), and
IP to PSTN without Internet,
IP to Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) through Internet (e.g., Skype),
PSTN to PSTN

From small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, everyone is looking forward to reap the benefits of VoIP phones system with regards to daily operations, productivity and customer service. The advantages that follow such a transition are many, with positive externalities across various factors which dictates the administration of the business.  Thus it has high potential to influence technology adoption of business organization. Many firms are installing a gateway to link an existing Private Branch Exchange (PBX) as well a traditional device with an IP PBX.
